Tuesday, February 18 is Toni Morrison’s 89th birthday! Join with us as we celebrate her life along with our partners throughout Lorain County. In addition to her acclaim as a Nobel Prize Winner in Literature, Toni worked as an editor at Random House – the first female African-American editor in company history, from 1967 to 1983. It was there that she published the works of Gayl Jones, Toni Cade Bambara, Henry Dumas, Huey P. Newton, Muhammad Ali, and Angela Davis, among other notable African American writers. Check local media outlets for a complete listing of events and activities.
Scheduled events include the following:
· a re-dedication of the Toni Morrison Reading Room at the Lorain Public Library – Main Branch (2 pm – 4 pm)
· an evening showing of the film “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am” at the Lorain Palace Theater and the Apollo Theater in Oberlin (discussion at 5 pm; film at 6 pm at both locations)
· a live-streamed event “A Gesture of Love and Reflection” at Oberlin College’s Alan and Irene Wurtzel Theater (9 am – 6 pm)
